Company Background and Approach
Marlin Offshore (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd was formed in May 2004 as a vehicle for the purpose of providing drilling and services to the Malaysian oil and gas industry.

Under existing Petronas’ licensing requirements, a drilling licence is granted only to companies which are either a rig owner/rig operator or a rig operator.

Although Marlin Offshore (Malaysia) will need to be supported by a foreign principal for its initial foray into this sector of the industry, it will endeavour to operate with maximum active local participation in the day-to-day operations. This is possible with its Management’s previous experience in Hercules Offshore Corporation, a drilling company operating in the Gulf of Mexico. In addition, individuals within the Management have extensive exposure in PETRONAS, Trenergy (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, multinational oil companies and international drilling contractors. This approach is likely to make it different from the other foreign backed Malaysian players who tend to operate as front companies. It is Marlin’s Offshore ultimate goal to develop genuine local capability although this may entails taking risk and incurring costs.

Marlin Offshore (Malaysia) has formed a partnership with Marlin Offshore Services, Inc., a Houston, Texas based company to provide Engineering, Offshore Asset and Project management support. In addition, Marlin Offshore (Malaysia) has formed a strategic alliance with KCA Deutag Drilling Ltd of the U.K. to establish a working platform of cooperation in provision of drilling services in Malaysia as well as overseas.

Marlin Offshore (Malaysia) holds a drilling licence (L-653714-V) from PETRONAS. This license is for supply of rig categories of Jack-ups, Tender assist drilling vessels, semi submersibles, Drillships and self contained platform rigs.
